IT Security is particularly important for businesses and as a leading IT Support company in Bristol we know how devastating a zero  day attack is.  In June we reported on a zero day attack that was in progress and that could compromise your computers.  By following our simple advise you would have protected your systems whilst Microsoft produced a patch.  The great news is the patch is now released and you can reverse the protection we advised.

What was the attack?

The attack was utilising a flaw called Folina which had been identified in Microsoft Office and other underlying software dealing with templates.  We reported on this in our article from June 2022

How do I apply the patch?

The patch has been rolled out as part of a series of fixes and if you have applied the latest updates then your system will be protected.  If not you need to Check for updates and install and reboot.

What else do I need to do?

We recommended running a powershell script to disable the diagnostics area which was being utilised by this attack.  Now it is fixed you can turn it back on by following the instructions below.

1. Click Windows icon
2. Type Powershell
3. Right click the powershell icon and select “Run as administrator”
4. Copy and paste the following code into the blue powershell box

PS C:WINDOWSsystem32> reg add HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsScriptedDiagnostics /f /v EnableDiagnostics /d 1

5. Press Enter
6. You should receive a response to say “The operation completed successfully”
