Why AI might cost your business money for the next few years?

Unless you have kept the radio, TV, Internet, social media, Email and newspapers out of your life for the last few years you will know that global players are investing billions into new data centres in an effort to have the processing power needed to lead the AI revolution.

So why is this going to cost your business?

All this hardware being fitted at the same time has been a major strain on the manufacturing giants and so the big memory manufactures have all decided to stop production of all but the most profitable kit.  This has resulted in little to no new memory being manufactured for standard computers, laptops etc.

What happens when there is short supply?

Prices, go up.  A lot! So far we have seen prices rise by 400% over the last 12 months and there is no sign of this changing during the next 1 to 2 years.

If anything prices continue to escalate more quickly as lead times increase.

So what? Why do I need memory?

You might know that memory is used in the manufacture of computers and laptops but it is also used for solid state storage (hard drives), video cards, mobile phones, tablets etc.

Without that piece of silicon you have essentially a very expensive doorstop.

What if I buy a new computer

Some manufactures such as Dell have announced price increases of 30% once they have exhausted existing stock and we expect other brands like HP to follow suit.  To put that into perspective a £600 entry level business laptop will likely cost you £780 or more in the next few months and probably higher by 2027.

The same will go for any other electronic device such as mobile phones, tablets and even the average business server.

Our advice

If you plan on buying new IT kit in the next couple of years, now might be a good time to do it before pricing increases.  We don’t have a crystal ball but we do have our finger on the pulse of technology and we believe this threat is realistic enough to pre-emptively warn you.
